iPhone Privacy Settings You Should Change Right Now

Apple markets the iPhone as a privacy-first device, but dozens of default settings still share your data with apps, advertisers, and Apple itself. A few minutes in Settings can dramatically tighten your digital footprint.

How Does App Tracking Transparency Work?

Since iOS 14.5, apps must ask permission before tracking your activity across other apps and websites. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and disable "Allow Apps to Request to Track" to block all requests automatically.

With this toggle off, apps cannot access your advertising identifier. This single setting eliminates most cross-app tracking used for targeted advertising and data profiling.

Review Location Access for Every App

Navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services to see which apps access your GPS. Set most apps to "While Using" instead of "Always" to prevent background location tracking.

Disable "Precise Location" for apps that only need your general area. A weather app works fine with approximate location. A food delivery app genuinely needs precise coordinates.

Should You Disable Significant Locations?

Apple quietly logs places you visit frequently under Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations. This data helps predictive features but creates a detailed movement history.

You can clear this history and disable the feature entirely. Most users notice no functional difference after turning it off, since Maps and Calendar work fine without it.

Lock Down Camera and Microphone Access

Check Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and Camera to see which apps have access. Revoke permissions for any app that should not need your camera or microphone for core functionality.

The orange and green indicator dots at the top of your screen show when an app is actively using the microphone or camera. If these appear unexpectedly, investigate which app triggered the access.

What Does Apple's Privacy Report Show?

Enable App Privacy Report under Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report. This tool shows how often apps access your contacts, location, photos, camera, and microphone over the past seven days.

It also reveals which domains apps contact most frequently. If a simple flashlight app connects to dozens of advertising domains, that is a clear signal to delete it immediately.

Limit Ad Personalization

Under Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Advertising, disable "Personalized Ads." This prevents Apple from using your data to serve targeted advertisements in the App Store, Apple News, and Stocks apps.

You will still see advertisements after disabling this setting. The ads simply become generic rather than tailored to your browsing habits, purchase history, and demographic profile.

How Can Safari Protect Your Browsing Privacy?

Safari includes Intelligent Tracking Prevention that blocks cross-site cookies by default. Under Settings > Safari, enable "Prevent Cross-Site Tracking" and "Hide IP Address" for additional protection.

Consider using Private Browsing mode with locked tabs (requires Face ID to access) for sensitive searches. This prevents browsing history and cookies from persisting after you close tabs.

Control Which Apps Access Your Contacts

Many apps request contact access during setup and upload your entire address book to their servers. Review Settings > Privacy & Security > Contacts and revoke access for apps that do not need it.

Social media apps use contact access to suggest friend connections, but this means your contacts' phone numbers and emails reach third-party servers. Decide if that trade-off is worthwhile.

Should You Use Mail Privacy Protection?

Under Settings > Mail > Privacy Protection, enable "Protect Mail Activity." This prevents email senders from knowing when you open messages and hides your IP address from tracking pixels.

Marketing emails routinely embed invisible tracking pixels that report open times, location, and device information. Mail Privacy Protection renders these tracking methods ineffective.

Manage Photo Library Access Carefully

Instead of granting full photo library access, iOS lets you share only selected photos with apps. When prompted, choose "Select Photos" and pick only the images the app actually needs.

Review existing permissions under Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos. Apps with full access can read metadata including GPS coordinates, timestamps, and device information from every photo.

What About Siri and Dictation Privacy?

Apple previously sent Siri audio recordings to human reviewers for quality improvement. Opt out under Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements by disabling "Improve Siri & Dictation."

You can also delete your Siri history under Settings > Siri & Search > Siri & Dictation History. This removes stored voice interactions from Apple servers associated with your device.

Enable Advanced Data Protection for iCloud

Advanced Data Protection encrypts most iCloud data end-to-end, meaning Apple cannot access it even with a court order. Enable it under Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Advanced Data Protection.

This protects iCloud Backup, Photos, Notes, Reminders, and more with encryption keys only stored on your devices. Set up a recovery contact or recovery key first, since Apple cannot help you recover data if you lose access.
